Two of my brother's three kids (grades 3,4, and 5) are very good athletes, especially the boy (and the third isn't bad, either). They are very competitive in nature.
It is not like him to be what I would consider as a true sportsman because he is so into winning and being competitive that he gets upset and angry if someone doesn't play well and it hurts his team.
So, I was not at all surprised to hear my brother tell me that a few days before field day his son was standing around and clapping and saying, "Good job! Good job!" to no one in particular. My brother asked him what he was doing. "I'm practicing so I can win the Sportmanship Award on field day."
And he did.
