Great American Eclipse 8-21-17 Gering, NE

202

Trip could not have gone better - we never got near I-25 and our drive was totally smooth - no traffic jams coming or going.  The weather was amazing, skies were clear, temperature was great and got cooler as the eclipse progressed, people were super friendly and gracious hosts, nothing was unusually expensive, our hotel room was nice and clean and quiet, and we were never crowded - lots of space to chill.  The filter I bought for my point and shoot camera did well for the eclipse leading up to totality - you can even see sunspots.  At the moment of totality I had to take the filter off to see the sun.  It got much darker right at totality and stars came out, street lights turned on, and the sun was really beautiful - the photos don't come close to doing it justice.  Glad we went!

Our venue was not crowded and people were very friendly.

We are right near Scotts Bluff National Monument.

It began around 10:30 a.m.

I like how you can see the sunspots!

About half way to totality it was just barely darker.

Only a moment away.... a bit of Bailey's Beads I think

I think that is Mercury lower left of the sun.

See the star/planet lower left?

Just starting to come out of totality - that was fast! Diamond Ring effect

A bigger diamond

And then like a switch, back to this, but other side.

Photo by Bill Schmoker - FB friend - shows kind of what it looked like at totality without any zoom - he was in Wyoming.

Wow, Diana. What an experience. I am so happy for you and your parents. Thank you for sharing your amazing photos. We did not prepare for this special event properly, but the differences we noticed in the light and temperature were still impressive. It reminded me of our tenuous position in this marvelous universe.
